Exterior Space Request Process

All campus spaces, both interior and exterior, must be used in alignment with the University of California and UCR policies, as well as State of California and federal regulations. The Exterior Space Committee, or ESC, oversees the usage and modification of exterior campus spaces to ensure conformity with these standards and aesthetic considerations.

This process applies to all campus departments and units requesting the temporary use of any exterior space on campus, including but not limited to:

  • Changes in the use of exterior spaces
  • Temporary use of campus land (typically five years or less)
  • Requests for exterior signage, furniture, or amenities
  • Installation of research equipment or communication infrastructure on campus grounds or buildings
  • Any other modifications to exterior campus spaces

The ESC is chaired by the campus architect and includes representatives from Facilities Services, Space Management, Campus Planning, and Building & Safety. This committee is responsible for reviewing and approving any proposed changes to campus exterior spaces.

Submit the Exterior Space Request Form with detailed information about the proposed use, timeframe, and any specific requirements.
